Manhattan is one of the five boroughs comprising the city of New York, including Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. As of 2018, more than 1.6 million people call Manhattan home. It is frequently referred to as the Big Apple or the city although when locals talk about “The City,” they aren’t referring to the entirety of the area. Instead, they are referring to its most populated borough, Manhattan. It is generally divided into Upper Manhattan, Uptown, Midtown, Downtown and Lower Manhattan. The name Manhattan comes from the original Lenape Natives, meaning “The place where we get bows.” The first name given to the area by Europeans was “New Angoulême.”

This name was bestowed by Giovanni da Verrazzano, an explorer from Florence who was sailing under the French Flag. He got deep enough into the harbor that he laid eyes on the “big river” known now as the Hudson. The man that river would be named for wouldn’t arrive until nearly a century later. Henry Hudson was also the first to encounter the Lenape people and travel north the river, reaching the present site of Albany. Within 15 years of his arrival, a permanent settlement would be established by the Dutch in the area they called “New Netherland.” Fort Amsterdam would begin to be constructed a year later in what is now the neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, signaling the birth of what would today be one of the world’s most important economic cities. The city would be conquered by the English and renamed New York before being retaken by the Dutch, who would change its name to New Orange. In 1674 it finally passed into the hands of the English where it would remain until the American Revolutionary War. When the Revolution had passed, Manhattan grew quickly and well thanks to the policies put in place by Alexander Hamilton. This growth would surge again when the Erie Canal was opened in 1825. In this period, Manhattan would overtake Philadelphia as the nation’s largest city. With the passing of the Civil War, it would continue this rocketing growth as immigrants came across the sea to grasp their part of the American Dream. This resulted in a city burgeoning with people, cultures, and foods from all over the world, the construction of the Subway in 1904 would help bind together the city and its surrounding boroughs. Manhattan would be the home of growing industries, important political and social movements such as the Stonewall Riots and become the center of world trade with the creation of Wall Street. Throughout its history, Manhattan has withstood the ravages of war, natural events like Hurricane Sandy, rising and falling crime rates, and even terrorist actions with the fall of the Twin Towers in 2001. Its indomitable spirit has seen it through it all, with its diverse population coming together to keep the Big Apple healthy and growing. Today Manhattan is home to some of the most important businesses, government offices, and art centers of the world. Many neighborhoods and landmarks in Manhattan are famous to the world, as Manhattan was visited by a staggering 63 million tourists in 2017 and Manhattan has some of the planet’s most-visited tourist attractions with the most visited of all being the Statue of Liberty.
